Wireless Internet & USB Modems - MTS MBlaze

Wireless Internet is a technology that has been much talked about but hasn't been able to catch up to the level that one might have expected. But as we move more towards "mobility" and "mobile devices" with the onset of Mobile Phones, Netbooks, Laptops and now Tablet PCs, we are getting more and more into the habit of having access to all our stuff "on the move".

A laptop in today's context looses its USP of portability if it has to be wired to an internet cable all the time! And this is where the wireless internet/data cards/usb modems fit in. 'Plug n Play' is what they are mostly referred to as, simply implying that you just plug in your USB modem and you are ready to go!

The most popular of the Wireless Internet devices is the USB modems that look identical to pen drives and are most convenient to use. There are a variety of options in this domain, the more popular ones being MTS MBlaze and Tata Photon. I had been reading and researching a lot about the efficiency of these devices before taking a decision on opting for them. To utter dismay, there was a lot of negative talk that I came across regarding the reliability and speed of these devices as compared to the wired broadband that we use. And quite right, there has to be a natural regression in the performance that is dependent on the media of transfer! And might I use the cliche of "Not comparing apples to oranges"!!

So in keeping with this approach, I view the device in question as an entity by itself and not an offshoot or more aptly - a replacement for wired broadband. To start with, Tata Photon has been an old timer in this domain. Its been there for long, but there has always been a question mark on its performance. MTS on the other hand is a new kid on the block, which in turn meant that I had no bad reviews or customer experiences to counter while opting for it. Secondly, they had quite an attractive offer that seemed worth a try in any case. Thus, I opted for the MTS MBlaze as my choice.

I have now been with MTS for more than 3 months and to my utter surprise, all inhibitions and doubts regarding the worth of wireless devices was to turn out to be only a misconception or fallacy. MTS has been giving me extremely good service ever since. But do keep in mind, I speak for the device not comparing it with its wired counterparts - there stands no valid comparison. By itself, the device provides to you a very decent surfing speed that would meet all your basic requirements of checking mails, blogging, social networking, etc that you may want to do. Its quite a reasonable gadget that serves you good enough to get access of the basics when on the move or just too lazy to put your main computer on. Yes, there are times when the connection does give up, but a few moments wait and reconnection invariably solved the problem for me. Of course, you will need a standard wired connection if your work is net dependent or quite intensive, but for all general light use, MBlaze does it for you. It comes in specially handy when you need to for instance update your laptop with latest virus definitions or windows update. You no longer need to plug in your laptop to your internet cable for this sole purpose. One more thing I noticed was, although at times some sites may take time to load in case of a peak hour usage, but the downloads work quite well with MBlaze - its always been rapid with good decent speeds. But as I say so, its important to also keep in mind that much of this may also depend on the area in which you are located and how widespread the network is in that area.

Somehow this form of internet takes me back in time to the good old days when we used to be so dependent on the 'Dial Up Internet' through our phones; It today seems a crazy proposition. But don't worry, this is a technology that stands somewhere in between - far better than the dial up but obviously not comparable to the wired broadband. As a gadget, this is a must have if you use a laptop. Try it and you would feel that it changes the whole meaning of a notebook pc releasing it from being restricted to one place by the wired net connection which in effect negates the sole purpose of a notebook - portability and mobility. So get rid of those wires and savor the experience of internet browsing on the move!
